Andrew Mioni Reflects on Scripture, Tradition, and the Enduring Church

I recently listened to a talk by Andrew Mioni about his experience growing up in the FSSP and his wife’s upbringing within the SSPX traditional movements. It offered me a glimpse into a perspective I had never taken the time to explore in any depth.

I found Andrew’s witness deeply compelling, particularly his testimony to the richness and depth of belief grounded in the Church’s traditions. It struck me as something of a counterbalance—or perhaps a “bookend”—to the more familiar Protestant emphasis on sola scriptura, or scripture alone. At the same time, it highlighted the real loss that Christ’s One Church experiences through these divisions within the Christian community.

There is a profound value in the traditions of the faith, which are often overlooked or minimized among many Scripture-centered Protestant communities. Yet, in a different way, these same communities remind us of the importance of a deep and living engagement with Scripture—something that, at times, Catholics themselves neglect. Both perspectives reveal strengths, and both expose areas where growth is needed.

The words of our recent convert, Eric Helms—a former Methodist minister—also come to mind. As he and his wife discerned changes within the authoritative structures of his faith tradition, particularly amid ongoing debates over gender and sexuality, their deeper concern centered on fidelity: fidelity to Christ and to the order of His creation. This internal tension ultimately led them to what Eric described as —a return to the “mothership” - the Catholic Church, understood as the enduring gift of Christ to His people.

Andrew draws out this reality beautifully from Scripture, inviting us to consider the Church not merely as a human institution, but as something divinely sustained. Hearing the journeys and debates that lead people into full communion with the Church is both powerful and affirming. It strengthens faith without condemning those who are still on the path or wrestling with these questions.

Certainly, much can be said about Church leadership and questions of fidelity in different times and places. Yet, it remains difficult to argue against Christ’s promise that “the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” That assurance continues to stand at the heart of the Church’s identity and hope.

I offer Andrew’s testimony as a thought-provoking reflection on what truly matters, inviting every believer to examine their own understanding in the light of both Scripture and Tradition.
